Doppler Ultrasound of Iliac Vessels
Doppler Ultrasound of the Iliac Vessels
The iliac vessels play a vital role in blood circulation, connecting the aorta to the arteries in the legs and carrying blood to and from the lower body. Doppler ultrasound of the iliac vessels is a specialized imaging study that evaluates blood flow in these essential arteries and veins.
Understanding Doppler Ultrasound
Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to measure the speed and direction of blood flow. By reflecting sound waves off moving red blood cells, it is possible to obtain a clear picture of how blood flows through the vessels.
Why is Doppler Ultrasound of the Iliac Vessels necessary?
This procedure is especially useful to identify and evaluate:
- Narrowings or blockages in the arteries (such as atherosclerosis).
- Blood clots in the veins (venous thrombosis).
- Aneurysms or dilations in the arteries.
- Preoperative or postoperative evaluation of vascular grafts.
- Vascular malformations.
Advantages of Doppler Ultrasound
- Non-invasive and radiation-free: Unlike other studies such as angiography, it does not require the introduction of a catheter or the use of ionizing radiation.
- Dynamic: It can evaluate blood flow in real time.
- Accessible and economical: Compared to other vascular studies, such as MRI or CT scan.
- Clear details: Provides a detailed view of vascular structures and the flow within them.
Key Points of Doppler Ultrasound of the Iliac Vessels
- Specialized: It specifically focuses on evaluating the blood flow of the iliac arteries and veins.
- No radiation: It does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation.
- Non-invasive: Unlike angiography, it does not require the insertion of instruments into the body.
- Identify obstructions: It can detect areas of reduced or blocked blood flow.
- Visualize clots: Helps in identifying thrombi in veins.
- Diagnosis of aneurysms: It can detect abnormal dilations in the arteries.
- Graft monitoring: It is useful to evaluate the success of procedures involving vascular grafts.
- In real time: Provides a dynamic image of blood flow as it occurs.
- Effective cost: Less expensive than other vascular imaging studies.
- Sure: It can be used in most patients, including people with metal implants or pregnant women, where other imaging methods may not be suitable.
Requirements: By appointment | Hygiene in the area.
