Endovaginal or Transvaginal Ultrasound
Endovaginal or Transvaginal Ultrasound
Endovaginal or transvaginal ultrasound is a specialized ultrasonography modality designed to obtain detailed images of the inside of the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic structures. Since the transducer is inserted into the vagina, this method provides clearer and more detailed images than an abdominal ultrasound.
What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. In the case of transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is inserted into the vagina to obtain close, detailed images of the pelvic structures.
Applications of Endovaginal or Transvaginal Ultrasound
This study is essential for:
- Endometrium evaluation: As in the case of abnormal bleeding or infertility.
- Detection of cysts or tumors: In the ovaries or uterus.
- Study of uterine malformations: Like the bicornuate or septate uterus.
- Location of intrauterine devices (IUD).
- Early pregnancy evaluation: Especially in the first weeks when an abdominal ultrasound is not clear enough.
Benefits of Endovaginal or Transvaginal Ultrasound
- Non-invasive: Although the transducer is inserted, no incisions are required.
- No radiation: Unlike other imaging methods, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation.
- High accuracy: Provides detailed and clear images of pelvic structures.
- Accessible and economical: Compared with other imaging techniques.
Conclusion
Endovaginal or transvaginal ultrasound is an essential tool in gynecology and obstetrics. It offers clear and precise images, allowing doctors to obtain valuable information about the health and function of pelvic structures, ensuring proper diagnosis and optimal care.
